Town 'n' Country, FL

The Town 'n' Country name began with one subdivision and now describes a much larger unincorporated part of western Hillsborough County. In 1958, LaMonte-Shimberg Corporation bought a 525-acre Webb family dairy farm near Hillsborough Avenue and Memorial Highway for Town 'n' Country Park. By 1978, the development covered over 2,000 acres and contained nearly 8,000 houses and townhouses. The broader census-designated place covered about 22 square miles and had 85,951 residents in the 2020 census. Its boundaries take in many neighborhoods and commercial corridors, so the original subdivision name no longer identifies a single civic or shopping center. Hillsborough County supplies municipal services and manages planning for this large suburban area. Town 'n' Country lies immediately northwest of Tampa International Airport, east of Old Tampa Bay, and around the meeting of Hillsborough Avenue and the Veterans Expressway.

Most land is residential, with commercial properties concentrated along major roads and an industrial district on the eastern side. HART's Northwest Transfer Center gives the road network a transit focus. Its June 2026 system map lists Routes 16, 30, 34, and 39 there, along with a Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority connection. Route 30 runs through Town 'n' Country toward the airport and downtown Tampa, while Route 34 follows Hillsborough Avenue. Adopted in 2003, the community plan calls for redeveloping older commercial centers, creating town centers, and improving trail links; those policies describe intended change, not a completed central district.

The closest equivalent to a civic campus is the Town 'N Country Commons on Paula Drive. Its 28,000-square-foot regional library shares the complex with a Head Start center and a senior center, with Westgate Park and Shimberg Gardens beside it. The library began in a West Gate Shopping Center storefront in 1969, moved to Paula Drive in 1975, and reopened as part of the Commons in 2008. In 2026, library hours extend to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and its calendar includes story times, technology help, job-skills programs, and study activities. Route 34 stops on Hillsborough Avenue nearby. The Commons serves a large multilingual and immigrant community. In 2020–24 Census estimates, 40 percent of Town 'n' Country residents were born outside the United States, and nearly 57 percent used a non-English language at home.

The western side changes character near Channel A and the bay's low-lying wetlands. The Upper Tampa Bay Trail starts at the Memorial trailhead off Montague Street and follows the channel north past Waters Avenue, providing a paved route for cycling and hiking. Farther east, Skyway Sports Complex supplies public fields and open-play hours. A walk-through entrance from the trail leads into the Town 'N Country Nature Preserve. Its one-mile spur passes pine flatwoods, freshwater marshes, and hardwood swamps inside the developed area; county guidance warns that standing water is common during the rainy season. Here, the paved cycling and walking route passes directly from suburban streets into the preserve's low-lying wetland.
