About Town of Pines

Town of Pines is a Porter County town in Pine Township, close to Lake Michigan and directly beside Indiana Dunes National Park. The setting is a meeting point of neighborhoods, dunes, wetlands, and the industrial history of northwest Indiana. The town's name fits the wooded upland, but the nearby lake and sand country are just as important to the local map. Michigan City is about four miles east, while the Dunes stretch along the shore to the north.

Town of Pines also has a major environmental chapter. The EPA identified a groundwater plume after testing residential wells for elevated boron and molybdenum, and the response included work to extend municipal water service. That history sits alongside ordinary town life: Michigan City Area Schools serves local students, with Pine Elementary and Barker Middle School as the zoned schools, and the Indiana Dunes provide a nearby landscape for trails, beaches, and wildlife. Town of Pines is therefore a small lakeshore municipality with two defining surroundings: the protected dune country at its edge and the industrial groundwater story beneath its streets.
