Its history began in 1853 when a freed Black man named Daniel Harris purchased land here, laying the foundation for a close-knit community built by free residents and families formerly enslaved at the nearby Hampton estate. Over the decades, generations of families established churches, built homes, and created a supportive neighborhood network. Today, its quiet streets and historic homes preserve that deep heritage right beside the modern downtown.
