About Traer

Traer is a Tama County city that grew after the Burlington, Cedar Rapids and Northern Railway came through in 1873. Its signature oddity is an iron winding staircase that once led to the local newspaper office: a freestanding reverse spiral connected to the building by a suspended walkway. U.S. 63 and Iowa 8 cross the town, but the staircase is the detail people remember. Traer is east-central Iowa with a railroad-town start and one wonderfully impractical-looking way to get upstairs.
