Trafalgar, IN

Trafalgar is a Johnson County town about 20 miles south of Indianapolis, spread across Nineveh and Hensley townships. The 2020 census counted 1,422 residents. It began as Liberty, a settlement associated with Buckner and a short-lived flat-bar railroad between Franklin and Martinsville, then took the Trafalgar name; local history ties the name to the British naval victory. The old rail connection helped the place grow, but the town’s present-day map is more about State Road 135, the surrounding rolling farm country, and the school campus just outside the center.

Indian Creek Schools are Trafalgar’s biggest community institution, with elementary, intermediate, middle, and high schools on one rural campus. The high school opened in 1967 after Nineveh, Trafalgar, and Morgantown schools were consolidated, and the district still draws students from several nearby communities. The town’s calendar adds a Fall Festival, Fourth of July celebrations, and a Christmas parade, while the library, local cafés, and town parks fill in the everyday stops. Franklin, Greenwood, and Indianapolis are close by for larger errands, but Trafalgar keeps its own rhythm: a school-centered town where the old rail story and current school district overlap.
