Truchas, NM

Truchas is a Rio Arriba County census-designated place on New Mexico’s High Road to Taos, roughly halfway between Santa Fe and Taos. The community sits around 8,000 feet on a high ridge, with the Truchas Peaks above and the Española Valley below. Local roads pass adobe homes, acequias, pasture, and mountain weather, and livestock still shares the road with cars. The high setting and long trip to larger towns keep everyday life tied to the immediate landscape.

The settlement began with the Nuestra Señora del Rosario, San Fernando y Santiago del Rio de las Truchas land grant in 1754. It was a Spanish frontier community built around farming, irrigation, livestock, and defense, with the early nineteenth-century Nuestra Señora del Rosario church at its center. A paved road did not reach Truchas until the 1970s, and many original land-grant bylaws still shape how the community handles roads and common land. Today the High Road brings visitors through, but the place remains grounded in its ridge-top village, acequias, church, and working pasture.
