Truchas, NM

Perched high on a ridge along New Mexico's High Road to Taos, Truchas sits roughly halfway between Santa Fe and Taos. At 8,000 feet, the village looks up at the towering Truchas Peaks and down across the wide Española Valley. Daily life here is quiet, rustic, and unhurried. Dirt and gravel lanes wind past traditional adobe homes, grazing horses, and historic irrigation ditches, with big mountain views in every direction.

Founded as a Spanish land-grant settlement in 1754, Truchas holds tight to its deep roots and historic architecture, centered around its nineteenth-century mission church. Paved roads only reached the ridge in the 1970s, helping preserve a self-reliant pace of life that has also drawn a small community of local artists and weavers. Relocating here means trading convenient suburban amenities for clear skies, crisp mountain air, and a tight-knit community shaped by centuries of tradition.
