Tucumcari, NM

Tucumcari is Quay County’s seat, a high-desert city whose map was drawn first by rail and then by the highway. In 1901 the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad built a construction camp here; the city took its name from nearby Tucumcari Mountain and became the county seat when Quay County was formed. The 2020 census counted 5,278 residents. I-40 and the old Route 66 alignment still frame the town, so its local story runs through freight, travelers, county business, and the businesses that grew up to serve them.

That history is easy to encounter without leaving town. The Tucumcari Historical Museum occupies the original 1903 schoolhouse and displays local artifacts, wagons, military pieces, and a Vietnam-era F-100. The New Mexico Route 66 Museum sits on West Route 66 Boulevard, while murals and neon signs mark the older commercial strip. Metropolitan Park’s former buildings, designed by Trent Thomas after his La Fonda Hotel work in Santa Fe, add another architectural thread. For residents, these landmarks sit alongside the county offices, Tucumcari Public Schools, restaurants, and highway-facing services; the place remains a working crossroads whose past is part of the everyday street scene.
