About Tunis

Tunis is a Burleson County CDP on the west bank of the Brazos River, four miles northwest of Snook. Founded in the mid-1800s amid large antebellum plantations, it became a trading center with a post office that operated from 1878 to 1910, a cotton gin, general store, blacksmith shop, school, and church. Farm Road 166 reached the town in the 1950s, and the New Jerusalem and Old Bethlehem churches remained part of the surrounding community. Tunis's map still joins the Brazos, farm roads, and a layered settlement history.
