Tunnel Hill, GA

Tunnel Hill is a Whitfield County city at the western base of Chetoogeta Mountain, tied to Dalton and the northwest Georgia road network by U.S. 41 and State Route 201. The town grew around the Western & Atlantic Railroad’s tunnel through the ridge: construction began in 1848, the tunnel opened in 1850, and the line connected Atlanta with Chattanooga. Tunnel Hill was incorporated in 1848, and the railroad corridor still gives the town its name, street pattern, and historical importance.

That same corridor became a Civil War supply route and battlefield. The Great Locomotive Chase ran through the tunnel, and the opening shots of Sherman’s Atlanta Campaign at Tunnel Hill came in May 1864. The restored tunnel, 1852 stone depot, Clisby Austin House, and Tunnel Hill Heritage Center put those layers in one local circuit; the house served as a field hospital, while the museum holds railroad and war artifacts. Annual reenactments and heritage tours keep the old rail town in the current calendar. Tunnel Hill is a small Georgia city where a mountain passage still doubles as its main address.
