Tuscola, TX

Tuscola is a small Taylor County city south of Abilene, part of the Abilene metro and the home base of Jim Ned CISD. The town grew near Jim Ned Creek in the late 1890s after John L. Graham deeded land to bring in a school, store, church, and cotton gin. A post office accepted the Tuscola name in 1899, chosen by founder Clarence M. Cash after his hometown in Illinois. That origin story is pure South Taylor County: a school site, a creek, a few needed businesses, and a name carried west.

School history is still the town's organizing thread. Tuscola's district expanded by absorbing Cedar Gap, Ovalo, Bradshaw, and later Lawn; those mergers formed Jim Ned Consolidated ISD. The present district describes itself as a community of small towns in the Jim Ned Valley, and Jim Ned High School in Tuscola is still the shared institution people point to. Tuscola is not just an Abilene outpost. It is the creek-and-school center of a rural district, with Highway 83 and the roads through Taylor County tying the town to its neighboring communities.
