Ubly, MI

Ubly is a Huron County village within Bingham Township, surrounded by the farm country of Michigan’s Thumb. The 2020 census counted 836 people. On Main Street, the Citizens Bank Block gives the village a compact piece of state history: local contractor David Pierce built it in 1907, and the building held a bank, harness shop, and library.

Albert Sleeper co-founded the bank with his uncle A. W. Merrell, later served in the Michigan Senate and as governor, and took sole ownership in 1900. In 1908, he and his wife, Mary Moore, set up a library above the bank; the Sleeper Public Library remains at the same Main Street address. Today the village lists the library, public works, village hall, and emergency contacts as part of its local service structure. Ubly’s civic story still meets on Main Street, where a former bank building carries both the village’s commercial history and its reading life. The building still gives Main Street a visible meeting point.
