Unadilla, GA

Unadilla is a Dooly County city laid out along U.S. 41, with Pine Street carrying the highway through the center. Perry is about sixteen miles north, Vienna—the county seat—is about thirteen miles south, and Interstate 75 runs along the west side with two nearby exits. Those roads make Unadilla a useful middle point in the agricultural country between the larger towns.

The railroad is the older reason the city exists. A Georgia Southern and Florida Railway line ran from Richwood to Unadilla, and Dooly County’s cotton and peanut economy grew around rail-connected towns. Unadilla was incorporated in 1891, and the name comes from an Iroquois word for “council place.” The city’s annual Hog Drop, held on New Year’s Eve since 2017, adds a distinctly local marker to the calendar, while Dooly State Prison occupies the city’s northeast corner. Put Unadilla on the map as a rail-and-farm town with a highway through its middle, Vienna nearby, and a New Year’s event that is hard to confuse with anywhere else.
