Unadilla, NY

Unadilla's name comes from an Iroquois word for "Place of Meeting," a fitting clue for a village set where the Unadilla and Susquehanna rivers meet in southwestern Otsego County. The village lies within the Town of Unadilla, about 20 miles southwest of Oneonta and near the junction of Otsego, Delaware, and Chenango counties. The town was divided into its present form by the New York Legislature in 1801, and the village was separately incorporated in 1828 and again in 1889.

That river setting still organizes the map. The Susquehanna runs along the village, while the Unadilla River joins it farther downstream near Sidney; New York Route 7 and Route 8 connect the area through the river valley. Village offices, the fire department, water service, parks and recreation committees, and the community house form the practical civic layer. The village board meets at the fire department twice each month. Unadilla is a town-and-village place whose name, roads, and government all point back to the same meeting point at the rivers.
