Union Bridge, MD

Union Bridge is a Carroll County town whose name sounds like a crossing and whose history is tied to the tracks. The 2020 census counted 936 residents. The Western Maryland Railroad reached town in 1862, setting off its biggest early growth spurt and leaving a rail corridor that still matters. Much of the town sits inside the Union Bridge Historic District, listed on the National Register in 1994, so old storefronts, homes, and civic buildings are part of the everyday streetscape.

Union Bridge has a couple of wonderfully specific local claims. It was the first small Maryland municipality to install electric streetlights, and its former Western Maryland station, offices, and express shed now house a railway museum. Maryland Midland Railway later made the town its headquarters, keeping the rail connection current. Carroll County farmland surrounds the town, but Union Bridge’s story is about the moment tracks arrived and gave a rural crossroads a new center. The bridge is in the name; the railroad is in the bones.
