Union City, OH

Union City is a Darke County village with 1,582 residents in the 2020 census, directly across the Ohio–Indiana state line from its twin city of Union City, Indiana. State Route 47 begins at the border and gives the Ohio side its main north–south connection, while the village’s streets lead to a commerce park, homes, and the shared two-state center. Union City operates its own police and fire departments, and the village’s small map carries the unusual responsibility of serving one half of a place divided by a state line.

Union City was platted in 1838 and incorporated in 1853, during the period when the Greenville and Miami Railroad reached town in 1852. The railroad helped turn the border settlement into a regional crossroads, and its presence is still part of the village’s local geography. The Lambert–Parent House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, adding a preserved nineteenth-century home to the railroad-era street pattern.
