About Union Deposit

Union Deposit is a Dauphin County community along Swatara Creek in South Hanover Township, with a name that gives away its first big job. Isaac Hershey and Philip Wolfersberger laid it out in 1833, and the Union Canal turned the creekside into a place where farm goods were deposited for shipment. The canal was destroyed by a flood in 1862, but the waterway still defines the southeast edge and ties the village to the Susquehanna. Union Deposit is central Pennsylvania in a canal-and-creek story.
