Union, MS

Union is a town spread across Neshoba and Newton counties, with most of its streets in Newton County and a smaller part extending north. The village grew around Union Church, a school, and Boler's Inn, a stagecoach stop on the old Jackson Road. When Sherman's troops passed through in 1864, local legend says the town's name persuaded him to spare it; Boler's Inn still stands. Rail service arrived in 1905 and pushed the town toward its present crossroads. Union's municipal map includes two recreation parks, a downtown Mini-Park, a public library headquarters, water treatment, a National Guard armory, and the post office. Union Public School District serves local students, while East Central Community College serves the wider five-county region. Union's local story is a mix of county-line geography, Civil War memory, railroads, and ordinary town services.
