Union Point, GA

Union Point is Greene County's railroad town, laid out in 1834 as the line reached a junction and later incorporated in 1904. The name says what the map still shows: rail lines meet here, and Lamb Avenue, carrying U.S. 278, runs through the center between Greensboro and Crawfordville. Georgia 77 heads toward Lexington, Siloam, and I-20, while Georgia 44 carries the route toward Washington. Those roads and the active Augusta-Atlanta rail line give Union Point a connection to several county towns at once, with Greensboro, the county seat, seven miles west.

The downtown and older residential blocks carry the industrial era. Union Manufacturing, later known as Chipman-Union, was once a major employer, and its closing in 2001 marked a hard turn for a town built around mills and rail. Today local revitalization work circles around historic storefronts, the former textile complex, and a possible rail-to-trail conversion along the Georgia Railroad corridor. The rail line still gives downtown a working backdrop, while the old Athens branch points to an earlier network that reached deeper into the state. Union Point's local clue is the overlap: a nineteenth-century junction, a textile mill legacy, and a new reuse question all sit along the same main street.
