About University CDP (Hillsborough County)
University is the unincorporated north Tampa census place built around the University of South Florida and the neighborhoods immediately surrounding it. It covers about 6.3 square miles, with Fowler and Fletcher avenues carrying most east-west activity and Bruce B. Downs Boulevard, 30th Street, and Nebraska Avenue handling major north-south trips. The landscape changes block by block: a vast academic campus, hospitals and research buildings, student apartment complexes, older subdivisions, motels, shopping plazas, and international restaurants all share the same area. Tampa postal addresses are standard, but much of University lies outside the city limits and receives Hillsborough County services.
USF defines the area in both name and scale. The Tampa campus opened to its first students in 1960 and now covers 1,562 acres with 249 buildings. Its museums, botanical gardens, athletics, residence halls, and classrooms create a daily population far larger than the census count alone suggests. The adjoining 112-acre USF Research Park adds laboratories, public-health facilities, technology companies, and startup space. Moffitt Cancer Center sits on campus, and James A. Haley Veterans' Hospital stands beside it across Bruce B. Downs, making health care and research as visible here as college life. Fowler Avenue's commercial growth followed that institutional cluster.
The community beyond campus has its own centers and needs. The 50,000-square-foot Victor Crist Community Center on 22nd Street houses classrooms, a gym, arts spaces, fitness facilities, social services, and the University Area Community Development Corporation. The nearby Arthenia L. Joyner library adds meeting rooms, computers, job help, and a makerspace. HART's University Area Transit Center connects numerous local routes, MetroRapid service toward downtown, and USF's Bull Runner shuttles; Bull Runner routes also circulate through campus and nearby housing. Even with those options, wide arterials and long blocks make many everyday trips car-dependent. University is a college district, medical center, working neighborhood, and arrival point for families from many backgrounds, all packed into one unusually busy piece of unincorporated Hillsborough County.
