Sitting directly west of St. Louis and Forest Park, University City (or "U City" to locals) packs a ton of personality into a compact footprint. The city owes much of its quirky character to its founder, an eccentric publisher named Edward Gardner Lewis who set out to build a model community around the time of the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair. You can spot his legacy right away, from the towering stone Lion Gates that welcome you to the Delmar corridor to the octagonal City Hall with its rooftop cupola. Backing right up against Washington University in St. Louis, the neighborhood has always attracted a mix of professors, healthcare workers, students, and creative professionals who appreciate its distinct blend of historic architecture and intellectual energy.

The Delmar Loop serves as the social heart of town, where people gather for burgers and music at historic spots like Blueberry Hill, catch national touring acts at The Pageant, or browse indie record shops and bookstores. The district flows smoothly across the municipal border into St. Louis, giving your evening out an easy, walkable flow. Right down the street, the newly renovated University City Public Library serves as a busy neighborhood hub with creative maker spaces and recording studios. Just nearby, COCA (the Center of Creative Arts) offers premier dance, theater, and visual arts classes for both kids and adults in a beautifully expanded historic facility.

Green space is easy to find here, with leafy parks tucked throughout residential neighborhoods and a dense canopy of mature street trees. Heman Park anchors the local recreation scene, featuring a public pool, tennis courts, sports fields, walking paths, and the Centennial Commons community center. Commuting is simple thanks to central highway access and nearby MetroLink stations, putting downtown Clayton, Barnes-Jewish Hospital, and downtown St. Louis within a quick drive.
