University of Pittsburgh Bradford is a census-designated place in McKean County, Pennsylvania, centered on the Pitt-Bradford campus just outside Bradford. The campus was born from a local push for higher education: in 1962, Bradford geologist Raymond N. Zoerkler wrote to Pitt Chancellor Edward H. Litchfield about the lack of a nearby college, and local leaders formed an advisory board. Pitt-Bradford opened on September 3, 1963, in the renovated Hamsher House with two-year transfer and starter programs. In 1967, land at the former Harri Emery Airport, along with an adjoining recreation tract, gave the school the site for its modern campus. It moved toward four-year degrees in the 1970s, with baccalaureate status arriving in 1979.
