Urania, LA

Urania is a La Salle Parish town whose identity has been tied to forestry for more than a century. Henry E. Hardtner arrived at the site in 1896, bought a sawmill, and renamed the settlement Urania in 1897 after the Greek muse of astronomy. In 1898 he organized the Urania Lumber Company, bought timberland, and built a short railroad to move logs. That early combination of mill, rail line, and forest management helped make Urania a center of the region’s lumber industry. The 2020 census counted 698 residents.

Hardtner also pushed reforestation and helped shape Louisiana’s first severance-tax law, so Urania’s history reaches beyond cutting trees to the way the South began thinking about long-term forest use. The modern LaSalle Lumber Company continues the town’s wood-products tradition, with a sawmill and nearby bioenergy operation employing the timber landscape in a new way. Town roads connect Urania with Olla, Tullos, and the wider central Louisiana forest country. A newcomer will find a small town whose name, jobs, and civic story all come back to the sawmill and the pines around it.
