Utica, MS

Utica is a Hinds County town whose story is closely tied to the Utica campus of Hinds Community College. The school began in 1903 as the Utica Normal and Industrial Institute, later became Utica Junior College, and joined Hinds Community College in 1982. The campus keeps its historically Black college traditions and includes the Utica Institute Museum, giving the town an institution with roots older than the current college system. Utica grew from the earlier Cane Ridge settlement and took its present name in 1837, after postmaster Ozias Osborn suggested the name of his former New York home.

Today, Main Street churches and the Hinds County School District sit alongside the college campus as everyday reference points. Mississippi Highways 18 and 27 meet in town, linking Utica with Jackson, Port Gibson, Vicksburg, and Crystal Springs. That junction makes the town part of several regional routes, while the campus brings students, history, and visitors back to the same small Hinds County crossroads.
