Valencia, PA

Valencia is a small Butler County borough in the Breakneck Creek valley, close to the creek's headwaters and near the Allegheny County line. Its name has a little railroad mystery behind it. The settlement began as Brookside, became Sunnyside in the 1890s, and was renamed Valencia when the railroad needed a name that would not duplicate a stop in Lancaster. Nobody seems to have pinned down who chose Valencia, which leaves the borough with a rare bit of local lore built into its sign.

These days the borough is part of the Mars area's orbit, with Mars Area School District serving local families and the larger township-and-borough landscape shaping everyday errands. Breakneck Creek is the natural thread: its headwaters start nearby, and the waterway runs through a region once dotted with mills and small industrial sites before continuing toward the Allegheny. The borough's roads lead through a mix of homes, wooded slopes, and open ground, while the nearby creek authority and watershed work keep attention on drainage and water quality. Valencia feels small in the literal sense, but its setting connects it to a much larger north Pittsburgh countryside.
