Valle Crucis, NC

Valle Crucis is a census-designated place in Watauga County, North Carolina, with 436 residents in the 2020 census. The community lies along N.C. 194 between Banner Elk and Boone, where three streams converge in a valley shape associated with an archbishop’s cross. The Latin name means “Valley of the Cross,” and the Watauga River, mountain farms, and winding roads keep that name connected to the landscape. The valley’s three creeks remain the visual key to the name.

Bishop Levi Silliman Ives founded the Valle Crucis Episcopal Mission in 1842, and the mission remains part of the community’s historic map. The Original Mast General Store, built in 1883, served mountain families for generations and was listed on the National Register in 1973; it reopened in 1980 after local residents helped bring it back. The Valle Crucis Historic District followed in 2015. Valle Crucis is a North Carolina community where a river valley, an Episcopal mission, a country store, and mountain roads meet.
