Valley Falls sits at the southern tip of Cumberland, right where the Blackstone River curves along the border of Central Falls. The neighborhood layout grew out of its nineteenth-century textile boom, when the Chace family built local cotton mills and constructed housing for arriving workers. That period left behind a rich legacy. Elizabeth Buffum Chace, a prominent reformer, made Valley Falls a key stop on the Underground Railroad, welcoming abolitionist leaders including Frederick Douglass and Sojourner Truth. Generations of Irish and French Canadian families later moved in to work the mills, shaping the close-knit community you see today. The handsome brick Cumberland Town Hall and the historic brick mill complexes along the water give the village a distinct architectural identity that stands apart from typical suburban developments.
