Valley Springs, SD

Valley Springs is a Minnehaha County city near the South Dakota-Minnesota line, named for springs in the Beaver Creek valley. Families settled along the Military Trail in 1872-73, and the railroad arrived on June 4, 1878. The tracks changed the scale of the place: Broadway grew into a main street, grain elevators and a steam-powered roller mill handled farm output, and Valley Springs became one of the state's largest grain-shipping points. A tornado damaged the east side of town in 1908, but the community rebuilt.

There are still good ways to read that history. Cassady Park carries the name of George Cassady, the first railroad station agent, while the city museum sits in a log cabin next to City Hall. Beaver Creek Nature Center adds trails and a Homesteader Day harvest festival southwest of town, and Legion Park is where local baseball and soccer take over. Valley Springs is close to Brandon and Sioux Falls, but its own story is older and more specific: springs under the valley, a railroad through the middle, grain and milk moving out, and a small city that kept its town shape after the big mill years ended.
