Van Buren, ME

Van Buren is an Aroostook County community on the Saint John River, directly across from Saint-Léonard, New Brunswick. The 2020 census counted 2,038 residents. U.S. Route 1, the Saint Leonard–Van Buren bridge, and the border crossing give the town a cross-river orientation unusual this far north. The river is part of the daily map here. MSAD 24/RSU 88 serves Van Buren, Hamlin, and Cyr Plantation, with elementary and secondary schools in town. Presque Isle and Madawaska fill in larger shopping, medical, and regional service needs.

Van Buren’s local character is deeply Acadian. The Acadian Village on Main Street preserves buildings, artifacts, and stories from the St. John Valley, while the river remains the geographic spine of the community. The name honors Martin Van Buren, but daily life is tied more to French-Acadian families, cross-border ties, winter roads, and the forest-and-farm economy than to the former president. Van Buren is a working border community, with schools, customs traffic, and heritage work sharing the same stretch of northern Maine.
