Van Buren, OH

Van Buren is a village in Hancock County laid out in 1833 by John Trout and George Ensminger, on the boundary of the early Portage and Cass townships. It was named for Martin Van Buren, then the sitting vice president, and incorporated in 1866. The village’s 2020 population was 396. A post office was established here in the 1830s, giving the settlement a civic thread that predates incorporation. The village remains a compact place within Allen Township, with Main Street and local government tied to the surrounding Hancock County roads.

Van Buren State Park directly south is the village’s most visible geographic neighbor. The 296-acre park includes Van Buren Lake, formed in 1939 when a dam was built across Rocky Ford Creek for a private wildlife preserve; Ohio took over the lake and preserve in 1950. Camping, hiking, bicycling, fishing, and picnicking extend the village’s recreational edge into the park. That pairing is the key to reading Van Buren: a small Hancock County village with a nineteenth-century town plan, a long-running post office, and a state recreation area at its southern boundary.
