Van Vleck, TX

Van Vleck is a Matagorda County census-designated place five miles east of Bay City, near State Highway 35 and Farm Road 2540. The 2020 census counted 1,923 residents. It began as Hardeman’s Post Office, developed as a stop on the Texas and New Orleans Railroad around 1899, and took the Van Vleck name in 1901 for railroad executive W. G. Van Vleck. The railroad gives this small inland community a history larger than its current street grid. Van Vleck Independent School District is the main civic institution, covering a broad northeastern Matagorda County area after nearby community schools consolidated in 1949.

The district’s K–12 campus gives the place a school-centered daily reference, while Bay City supplies county-seat services and larger shopping. Industrial plants around Bay City and Sweeny shape the wider work map, linking Van Vleck’s rural roads to the coastal manufacturing corridor.
