Vanceburg, KY

Vanceburg is a home rule-class city and the Lewis County seat on the south bank of the Ohio River in northeastern Kentucky. William Vance helped found the city in 1797, and the river made Vanceburg a county center where roads, courthouse work, and water traffic met. The town's geography is low and linear: the river forms the northern edge, while KY 9/10, the AA Highway, runs through the southern side toward Tollesboro.

County government remains visible in the city, with the clerk's and circuit clerk's offices on Second Street and the Lewis County courthouse serving the wider county. The 1937 flood, when the Ohio crested at 75 feet, is part of Vanceburg's local memory and a reminder of how much the river controls the town. Lewis County Schools operate a main complex west of town along KY 10, tying school life to the same road corridor that carries people toward Maysville and the rest of the county.
