Vandenberg AFB, CA

Vandenberg AFB is a Santa Barbara County census-designated place built around a major coastal launch and test installation; the base’s official name became Vandenberg Space Force Base in 2021. The installation covers about 99,604 acres, with roughly sixteen launch facilities and complexes, a 15,000-foot runway, and a long Pacific-facing downrange. It began as Camp Cooke, an Army garrison established near Lompoc in 1941, transferred to the Air Force in 1957, and entered the space age with the 1958 launch of Discoverer 1, the first polar-orbiting satellite. Missile testing and polar launches made the coastal location part of the mission rather than just the scenery.

Space Launch Delta 30 manages Western Range launches and test operations for the Space Force, the Department of Defense, NASA, and commercial partners including United Launch Alliance, SpaceX, and Firefly Aerospace. The base also hosts missile testing, the National Reconnaissance Office, the Missile Defense Agency, and other space and training units. Outside the gates, Lompoc and Santa Maria provide the larger service map; inside, housing, security, launch schedules, airfield operations, and range safety set the rhythm. Vandenberg is also a significant ecological and cultural landscape, with miles of coastline, dunes, wetlands, archaeological resources, and protected habitat folded into the working installation.
