Vandiver, AL

Vandiver is a Shelby County census-designated place and unincorporated community of 1,084 residents in the 2020 census, in the northeastern part of the county along Alabama State Route 25. The highway leads about 10 miles southeast to Vincent and about 10 miles north to Leeds on a winding, mountainous route. Homes, churches, small businesses, and side roads follow the valleys and ridges, giving Vandiver a linear shape instead of a compact town center.

The Falkner School, a frame schoolhouse dating to about 1850, is listed on the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage. County Road 43 carries traffic past the school and into the surrounding hills, while the Norfolk Southern rail line follows the corridor that once belonged to the Central of Georgia Railway. Vandiver first appeared as a census-designated place in 2010, but its older roads, schoolhouse, and rail line give the place a much longer local story. It is a Shelby County crossroads where mountain roads still set the rhythm.
