Vanleer, TN

Vanleer sits in Dickson County about 49 miles west of Nashville, close enough to be part of the Nashville area's wider orbit while keeping its own name and history. The town was named for Anthony Wayne Van Leer, who owned and operated Cumberland Furnace, one of Middle Tennessee's early ironworks. That connection gives Vanleer a local backstory tied to the region's industrial past: the furnace produced pig iron and other goods, used water and fuel from the Cumberland country, and grew into a large operation before the Civil War.

Present-day Vanleer is organized around county roads, a small-town center, and Vanleer Elementary, which serves grades 1 through 5 in Dickson County's school system. Cumberland Furnace lies nearby, so the town's name points toward a neighboring historic village as much as toward a person. Vanleer's useful orientation is that combination of west-of-Nashville location and iron-making history: it is a Dickson County town whose map still carries the name of the industrialist who shaped the surrounding landscape.
