Varnville, SC

Varnville is a Hampton County town whose story starts as Dixie, an unincorporated village settled around 1860 where a road crossed the Port Royal and Augusta Railroad. The Varn brothers ran a sawmill north of the tracks and sold the railroad its right-of-way; the town took their family name, opened a post office in 1872, and incorporated in 1880. That railroad-and-sawmill origin still gives Varnville its shape, with Hampton, the county seat, only a few miles northwest. The two towns function as a local pair, sharing events and school connections. Hampton County School District 1 serves students at Varnville Elementary, North District Middle, and Wade Hampton High, all in town. Varnville is a Lowcountry crossroads whose old timber economy, railroad line, and neighboring county seat remain part of the day-to-day orientation.
