Vass, NC

Vass is a Moore County town of 952 residents in the 2020 census, built around a railroad stop that began as Bynum, became Winder, and took the name Vass in 1892. The Seaboard line moved lumber, turpentine, and resin from the surrounding country, and the town incorporated in 1907. Today U.S. 1 carries traffic between Sanford and Southern Pines, while NC 690 runs southeast toward Spring Lake and Fayetteville. Vass sits on a low ridge between the Little River and its tributaries, so the town's roads, old commercial blocks, and waterways all fit into a compact Sandhills map.

Vass-Lakeview Elementary keeps one piece of school life local, and the Commercial Historic District preserves the railroad-era center. The town's older buildings tell a practical story: stores, a hotel, bank, lumber company, shuttle factory, and tobacco warehouse once clustered around the rail stop. The Little River drainage leads southwest toward Spring Lake and the wider Sandhills, giving the town a regional connection that is both commercial and physical. Vass is small, yet its map still shows exactly why it formed where it did: a rail line, a ridge, and a corridor for forest products.
