Vassar, KS

Vassar is an Osage County census-designated place northeast of Lyndon, with the south shore of Pomona Lake less than a mile away. The post office began at La Mont’s Hill in 1871 and moved to Vassar in 1887; the ZIP code still ties the community to that name. Vassar has a few hundred residents, and the surrounding landscape is the bigger story: lake water, Flint Hills grassland, farm roads, and the long trail corridor that follows an old railroad grade.

Pomona Lake’s 1963 dam controls runoff from a 322-square-mile watershed. Around the lake are six Corps-managed parks, Pomona State Park, boat ramps, campgrounds, fishing docks, nature trails, and public hunting ground. Flint Hills Trail State Park runs 118 miles across eastern Kansas and allows hiking, biking, and horseback travel. In Vassar, those places turn a small roadside settlement into a launch point for weekends built around water, trail miles, and open country. Water levels, trail conditions, and seasonal weather set the pace for those outings.
