Venetie, AK

Venetie is a small Neets'aii Gwich'in village set along the north bank of the Chandalar River, about 45 miles northwest of Fort Yukon. Daily life here revolves around the seasons, where hunting, fishing, and traditional subsistence practices have sustained families for generations. It is a quiet, tight-knit community with deep cultural roots and a strong tradition of managing its own vast tribal lands.

Because no roads connect Venetie to the highway system, travel and supplies depend entirely on small planes and the river. Flights land year-round at the local gravel airstrip with mail, groceries, and passengers, while riverboats provide seasonal travel from late spring through autumn. Around the village, people get around by ATV, snowmachine, or dog team, with trails leading out to spots like Venetie Lake. For families with children, the local John Fredson School serves students from kindergarten through twelfth grade and acts as a central gathering point for the community.
