Vernon, FL

Vernon is a Washington County city in Florida, where the 2020 census counted 732 residents. The city began as Roche's Bluff, a trading post on Holmes Creek built by Stephen J. Roche during the Florida Territory era. It became Vernon in 1851, named for George Washington's Virginia home, and served as Washington County's seat until 1927, when the courthouse moved to Chipley. The creek is still the town's clearest geographic line.

Holmes Creek gave early Vernon a water route toward Bonifay and nearby communities, while the military road through town made the place a crossroads between Tallahassee and Pensacola. Florida State Road 79 now carries the main traffic, with State Road 277 beginning in Vernon toward Chipley. Washington County School District serves the city. Vernon incorporated in 1926, and its older county-seat role remains visible in the road layout and local history around the creek. It is a small Florida Panhandle town shaped by a trading post, a courthouse, and the waterway that first brought commerce through.
