Vernon, MI

Vernon had 738 residents in 2020 and is a village inside Vernon Township in Shiawassee County. A post office has operated here since 1842, and the village was platted in 1850 before taking its name from the surrounding township. That early postal and street network grew in the middle of Michigan’s farm country, where county roads connect Vernon with Corunna, Owosso, and neighboring rural communities.

The village’s school and library connections show how local services have changed over time. Vernon District Public Library serves the village and township, while Corunna Public Schools serve Vernon students. A former elementary school building in Vernon now houses the Shiawassee Regional Education Service District’s College and Career Readiness Center, which opened in 2023 for career and technical programs.
