About Vernon
Vernon is the village within the Town of Vernon in western Oneida County, with Skanandoa Creek running through the town’s eastern side. Josiah Bushnell became the first permanent settler in 1794, and the town was formed in 1802 from parts of Augusta and Westmoreland. The creek powered early mills, including Vernon Mills, while the Vernon-Verona-Sherrill district serves area schools. Vernon is central New York in a creek-and-township arrangement, with one name doing double duty on the map.
