Verona, NY

Verona is a southwestern Oneida County place organized as the Town of Verona, named for Verona, Italy, and formed from Westmoreland in 1802. Its western edge reaches Oneida Lake, while the Erie Canal and, later, the New York State Thruway traced the same broad east-west corridor through the town. Verona once had mills, factories, stores, hotels, and the Verona Springs hotel, whose “water cure” drew visitors from farther away. In 1993, the Oneida Indian Nation began its bingo hall and casino in town, adding a major modern chapter to the local map. The quick local picture is canal country, lake edge, old hamlets, and one very recognizable Oneida Nation presence.
