Verplanck, NY

Verplanck is a Hudson River hamlet where a Revolutionary War crossing and a restored waterfront still occupy the same small map. The community sits on the river's east bank in the Town of Cortlandt, between Buchanan and Montrose, with Verplanck's Point projecting at the southern end. During the Revolution, the Continental Army used the Point as a staging ground for the Kings Ferry crossing toward Stony Point. That history is still marked along the riverfront, where plaques and the older street grid keep the crossing story close to present-day streets.

Today, Cortlandt Waterfront Park is the clearest gathering place. It stretches from the old Steamboat Dock to almost 30 acres at Broadway and Riverview Street, with a riverfront trail, fishing pier, boat launch, overlook, veterans memorial, and aviation-themed playground. The park also hosts rowing through the Cortlandt Community Rowing Association and a summer series of outdoor concerts and movies. Verplanck is a place where the Hudson is part of the neighborhood street plan, and where the old ferry landing has become the setting for a boat launch, a trail, and Thursday-night events.
