Versailles, PA

Versailles is a compact Allegheny County borough on the north bank of the Youghiogheny River, about 15 miles southwest of Pittsburgh. The river forms much of the borough’s southern edge, with McKeesport and White Oak on the land side and Elizabeth Township across the water. Versailles was incorporated in 1894 from the older villages of Bissell and Elrod, so its map is layered over earlier settlement, not laid out from a single planned start. Route 48’s Boston Bridge provides the direct river crossing.

Present-day Versailles is tied to McKeesport Area School District, county services, local police and fire departments, White Oak EMS, and the Mon-Yough area’s shared roads and utilities. The floodplains along Long Run and the Youghiogheny keep the river part of everyday borough planning, while the bridge connects homes to jobs and shopping on both sides. There is no broad commercial center to compete with McKeesport nearby; Versailles works as a residential borough with a very legible river edge. The local scoop is the old-village origin and bridge connection: two nineteenth-century settlements now facing the Youghiogheny and the Pittsburgh region.
