Veyo, UT

Veyo is a Washington County census-designated place on State Route 18, about 18 to 20 miles north of St. George at the edge of the Dixie National Forest. The community became distinct from Gunlock in 1918 and sits at roughly 4,470 feet, where the road leaves the St. George basin for the higher country toward central and northern Washington County. The name has several local explanations, including a combination of verdure and youth and an acronym for virtue, enterprise, youth, and order.

Veyo's best-known roadside marker is Veyo Pies and Bakery near Center and Main. The bakery has more than three decades of pie-making behind it, and its Veyo Volcano Pie takes its name from the cinder cone along the highway. The old Veyo school and churches remain part of the community's historical record, while Route 18 keeps Veyo connected to the forest, volcanic country, and St. George. It is a small high-desert stop whose name, school, pie shop, and road all point to the same north-south corridor.
