Viborg, SD

Viborg was founded on Danish heritage and a bit of practical grit. In the 1870s, Danish immigrants built a small settlement called Daneville near Swan Lake. When the railroad arrived in 1893 and bypassed them by about half a mile, the settlers did not miss a beat. They simply packed up their shops and homes, moved everything over to the tracks, and renamed the town Viborg after a historic city back in Denmark.

Today, that close-knit community spirit is alive and well in this quiet southeastern South Dakota town. Residents celebrate their roots each summer during Danish Days, catch movies at the volunteer-run Lund Theatre, and gather for Viborg-Hurley school games. Between the local parks, the swimming pool, and the Daneville Heritage Museum, it offers a warm, easygoing pace of life where neighbors quickly become friends and hometown pride runs deep.
