Victoria, KS

Victoria is an Ellis County city whose two names tell the story of its settlement. Scotch-English immigrants founded Victoria in 1874; two years later, Volga German settlers established Herzog just a half-mile north. The communities grew together, and Herzog officially took the Victoria name in 1913. The Kansas Pacific railroad helped place the town on the prairie map, while St. Fidelis parish and the surrounding farm country gave the German-Russian settlement a durable center. The railroad and farm roads kept the place connected.

St. Fidelis Catholic Church, built from local limestone and completed in 1911, rises above the town with twin towers and became the first basilica in Kansas in 2014. Victoria's annual Herzogfest brings the Volga German tradition into the present with music, food, and local gatherings. The town sits nine miles east of Hays and nine miles north of the Smoky Hill River, but Victoria's local map joins two immigrant settlements, a distinctive church, and a heritage festival on the same prairie.
