About Victoria

Victoria's central plaza keeps the city's Mexican-colonial origin in daily view. Martín De León established Guadalupe Victoria on the Guadalupe River in 1824 and named the settlement for the first president of independent Mexico. DeLeon Plaza now has a bandstand, shade trees, benches, and a pavilion used for public programs. Its 2026 calendar includes library-and-parks recreation nights and the two-day Tejas Fest scheduled for October, whose mainstage lineup pairs Tejano and norteño music with Texas country performers. A few blocks north, the Victoria Public Library keeps daytime and evening hours and hosts children's, technology, craft, and cultural programs. Victoria remains the Victoria County seat and a commercial center for the surrounding coastal region. The Guadalupe River also shapes the city's largest public landscape.

Riverside Park contains 660 wooded acres along four and a half miles of river frontage, with a boat ramp, paddling trail, disc golf, ballfields, golf course, rose garden, picnic areas, and the Texas Zoo. Higher education has a similarly regional role. The University of Houston-Victoria began in 1973 as an upper-level off-campus center and gained permanent degree-granting status in 1983; it is one of four separately accredited institutions in the University of Houston System. Music moves among several local venues during the annual Victoria Bach Festival. Its 51st season in 2026 offered a week of orchestral, choral, chamber, and community performances, including free morning concerts, pay-what-you-can programs, library events, and evening concerts at churches and the Victoria Fine Arts Center.
