Victory Gardens, NJ

Victory Gardens is a compact Morris County borough that began as a wartime housing project rather than an old farm crossroads. The 2020 census counted 1,582 residents. In 1941 the federal government acquired 91 acres in Randolph Township for 300 homes for defense-industry workers, and the neighborhood became its own borough in 1951. The name came from the victory gardens planted during World War II, while the streets took names from US presidents. The borough's small size is part of its story. The borough is still one of New Jersey's smallest municipalities, with a tightly packed street plan and Dover right alongside it for schools, shopping, and daily services.

The temporary wartime structures eventually gave way to more permanent housing, including a 1970s garden-apartment project, but the original purpose remains easy to see in the compact layout. Victory Gardens is a Morris County place built around a very specific moment: workers, wartime production, vegetable plots, and a new neighborhood becoming a town of its own.
