Vienna, GA

Vienna is the county seat of Dooly County, founded as Berrien in 1826 and renamed Drayton in 1833. The 2020 census counted 2,928 residents. U.S. Route 41 runs through town as Third Street, linking Vienna to Unadilla north and Cordele south, while Interstate 75 has pulled newer commercial and industrial activity toward the city limits. The Georgia Southern and Florida Railroad arrived in 1888, followed by a telegraph office, waterworks, and electric lights. Historic downtown restoration now shares the map with highway exits and newer businesses.

The Georgia State Cotton Museum occupies a 125-year-old schoolhouse between downtown and I-75, with cotton bales, farm tools, periodicals, and a small cotton patch that keeps the county's agricultural economy visible. Each year Vienna hosts the Big Pig Jig, Georgia's oldest official barbecue cooking competition, which draws more than 20,000 spectators. Dooly County School District operates one elementary school, one middle school, and one high school. Vienna's everyday geography therefore runs from courthouse and school routines to cotton history, barbecue, and the commercial corridor along I-75.
